ASSE Storytelling Webinar

On Wednesday June 22, our Founder, Randy Cadieux will be delivering a webinar on the power of storytelling.

From the ASSE website:

Organizational change is hard, but truly transformational change, such as safety culture transformation, is even harder. To take an organization from one state to a completely different state can be a daunting task for leaders. To make matters even harder, many change efforts rely on logic and methodical processes, where employees are explained the benefits of changing in ways that may seem intangible and perhaps cold. If leaders fail to connect the change efforts and desired outcomes in an emotional way employees can relate to, lasting transformational change may meet a brick wall.

On the other hand, if leaders engage with employees and try to make emotional connections, tying the change efforts and goals to something workers can feel, their efforts may have more impact. As John Kotter describes in his book The Heart of Change, workers need a “see, feel, change approach" to help them get on board with change initiatives. Storytelling can have a powerful impact on leaders' abilities to connect with and influence mangers, supervisors and line employees.

In this session Randy Cadieux will describe some foundational principles of change efforts and will describe how storytelling may help improve the change process. Randy will also illustrate this concept by going into storytelling mode and using examples from his keynote presentation “From Cowboys to Ninjas: A Story of Transformational Change."

Please register at the link below and join us for a fun and informative webinar and learn how you may make an impact through the use of storytelling in your organization!

ASSE Virtual Symposium Presentation: Measuring Safety for Successful Events in High-Risk Operations

Our Founder, Randy Cadieux presented a webinar for the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) as part of the the virtual symposium titled "Using Safety Metrics to Identify Real Threats." Randy's presentation is titled "Measuring Safety for Successful Events in High-Risk Operations." This presentation is accessible on-demand and more information, including links to register and access the content may be found here. A description of the presentation may be found below:

"This presentation will discuss the use of metrics in measuring safety, with an emphasis on leading indicators. Rather than viewing safety as an absence of accidents or failure, or by achieving a lagging indicator goal (such as beating industry lost time injury rates) this presentation will discuss proactive ways to learn about and measure safety through forward looking approaches. Many of these measurement areas are qualitative, yet have the potential to be used in a quantitative and measurable manner. Much of the information will be derived from Mr. Cadieux's experience in US Marine Corps aviation operations and how safety was proactively managed for successful operational outcomes and mission accomplishment."

V-Speed's Founder to Present at the Alabama Natural Gas Association Spring Seminar in Birmingham, AL on March 12, 2015

Our Founder, Randy Cadieux will be presenting a session at the upcoming 2015 Alabama Natural Gas Association Spring Seminar. Randy will discuss how leadership and crew performance in high-risk industries may be used to help manage safe operational performance. Details of Randy's speaker session are below:

Session Title: “Leading Teams at the Sharp End: Creating Safety through Teamwork in High-Risk Environments”

Session Topic Description:

"Leadership training and education often focuses on strategic leadership areas, such as major transformational change, or helping senior level managers or executives become more visionary. This type of focus is noteworthy, as it is needed to help propel organizations forward in the quest for product and process improvement. However, where the real work is done, at the “sharp end” where employees are exposed to safety hazards, there does not seem to be much emphasis on educating leaders or teaching teams how to perform more effectively in hazardous environments. This session will explain methods for coaching operational teams to help them become more adept at safe operational performance. By focusing leadership and teamwork training on those doing the work, there are opportunities to improve the way these teams are led and managed, the way they mitigate risk, and their ability to innovate and adapt during dynamic hazardous operations. If leaders, managers, and supervisors who work with teams in high-risk environments understand these concepts it may help them to coach these teams into higher safety and operations performance."

Presentation Title:  Leading Teams at the Sharp End: Creating Safety through Teamwork in High-Risk Environments

Date: October 15, 2014 11:00 am-12:30 pm Central Time

Session Description: Leadership training and education often focuses on strategic leadership areas, such as major transformational change, or helping senior level managers or executives become more visionary. This session will explain to safety professionals methods for coaching the operational teams they work with on a regular basis to help them become more adept at safe operational performance. By focusing leadership and teamwork training on those doing the work, there are opportunities to improve the way these teams are led and managed, the way they mitigate risk, and their ability to innovate and adapt during dynamic hazardous operations. If safety professionals who work with teams in high-risk environments understand these concepts it may help them to coach teams into higher safety performance.

Safety Roundtable at Natural Gas Fall Workshop 2014

V-Speed will be presenting on the subject of leadership and actively managing safety in high-risk environments at the Natural Gas Fall Workshop 2014 in Athens, AL on September 10th, 2014. While many people view and measure safety in different ways, one of the ways we at V-Speed think safety should be measured is through the existence of proactive, well-trained teams with competent leaders, who constantly seek to manage risk while pushing the boundaries of operational performance. After all, organizations don't simply exist to remain in a state of safety. They exist to perform a mission. Crews and teams must continuously work to align operations and safety visions and goals so that they can work towards sustainable growth, which includes preventing and minimizing major accidents. Safety should also be in their definition (or description) of Operational Excellence. Our founder will present on the subject of actively managing safety through leadership in high-risk environments, and he will touch on the importance of building resilient teams and systems, and the capacity to flex, adapt, and change work systems and methods to manage risk.
